Our guest speaker was Kay Webster of the Greene County Public Library Foundation. She manages the
Greene County service area of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. When enrolled, any child from birth to
their 5 th birthday living in Greene County receives monthly an age-appropriate high-quality book in the
mail. The first book they receive is “The Little Engine that Could”; on their 5 th birthday they receive a
book about transitioning to pre-school/kindergarten. The program is free for the parents and children –
the foundation covers the $25 fee through its sponsors. The only request of the parent is that they read
the book to their child. Sometimes this works in reverse – the child helps the parent read the book
(they’re starting to develop bilingual books). To date 5,000 kids in Greene County have received 167,000
books – world-wide the Imagination Library has distributed over 100,000,000 books. Anyone can start
up a service area – Kay’s Foundation covers all of Greene County. New service areas could be defined by
zip code or city borders, etc.
Craig reported that 8 of our flags posted at a school were stolen – the flag pole was bent over and the
flag removed. Our next flag posting is Veteran’s Day in early November.
